TIPS “TIPS” ARE BASICALLY any bit of useful information about radio control cars that can fit into a paragraph. It could be about anything hobby related; nitro, electric, dirt, touring, short course, pitting, charging, painting, trout, feedbag! If you have a good Tip that can be jammed into 100 words of text, shoot an email to: Jeff@vrcmag.com and you may get into the magazine. IS THERE AN APP FOR THAT? This hobby has more computer interfaces than ever, but who wants to lug a laptop to the track? Check your pocket; rumor is, you already have a computer in there. We were bummed at the track because our Tekin ESC needed setting changes after a motor swap, and there wasn’t a laptop in sight. No problem; a quick visit to the Play Store and presto, we be tuning on our phone. It turned out that this particular Hotwire app was easier to use than the desktop version. Many devices connect via Bluetooth or WiFi, but check whether your specific setup requires extra adapters if you’re hard-wiring. Stop using a laptop for race tuning, and check for an app. FOAM FIRMNESS Are open-cell inserts making a comeback? They seem to be, for some racing conditions; but there isn’t always a rating system for comparing hardness, especially between manufacturers. Here’s a simple comparison method that requires only a table and a hand: stack two inserts on a flat surface, then squish them down with your hand to see which one collapses first; that one is the softer insert. During testing, we found that stock White Pro-Line inserts were much softer than Blue Schumacher medium, which were marginally softer than Gray JConcepts. This method doesn’t give hardcore numbers, but who cares? It’s just enough info to know whether you’re working with soft, medium, or hard, relative to each other. 26 WWW.VRCMAG.COM We are scientific ... use your hand to measure softness!
