Acceleration & Speed_ It’s hard even to say the words “acceleration and speed” when describing the Gelande 2, never mind explain that 2mph might be the slowest we’ve tested, but when it comes to this class, it really isn’t about speed. It tracked straight, and that’s a plus, but to be honest, we think it should go faster. So, as do most mini scalers, the Gelande suffers in the scores on this test because it’s made for mini trails where speed isn’t necessary. Rating: 3/3 Braking_ Immediate. It isn’t going fast, so the driveline friction alone will stop the wheels and hold it in position without brakes. The speedo is set to instant reverse (as it should be in this case), so brakes actually are immediate reverse. It takes some getting used to if you are a racer, but it starts to feel natural after a few minutes. Rating: 8 Crawling/Trail Handling_ For a mini scaler, it’s sort of heavy, and most of that weight is in the pretty body sitting on top. The shocks/springs did a good job of keeping the truck straight, and the articulation was better than I thought it would be. That can be attributed to the lack of leaf springs in this case. The little LiPo and brushed motor did a decent job of providing the torque, and the super-low final drive ratio helped move that mass over some pretty big rocks when looking at it in scale. The electronics were decent but still lacked some feel in the lower ranges of the throttle, so smooth throttle application was harder than we would prefer, but generally pretty good. We did get the driveline to stall in a few instances where more power/ battery would have helped, but overall, in the trails we were pretty happy with the performance. Rating: 8 TESTED 72 WWW.VRCMAG.COM Derek prefers the 2-door Wranglers in real life.
