Monster Trucks have been around in RC since the early days. Midnight Pumpkin, Big Brute, and Clod Buster all defined what monster truck tires were – which eventually poured over into Truggy tire design. The T-Maxx made racing MT’s popular but some of the rules were based on outdated design and were generally there to just “fit in” with what was already on the market. Racing always pushes innovation and until recently the MT style of tires and rims were based on 25-year old mounting methods.
AKA has recently introduced their EVO line of Truggy tires that now has a “race design” built in with more of an 1/8-scale buggy type mount. This new bead lowers weight, makes mounting easier and combined with their new rims with stiffeners, claims to make any truggy faster. Simply looking at the weight reduction alone we’d have to agree. They are available in all the current AKA tread patterns that racers like – I-beam, Cityblock, Grid Iron, and Impact and you get to chose the compound, inclusion of inserts, or even the “forever lazy” favorite Pre-Mounts.
Here’s what AKA had to say about the new release:
The new EVO Truggy tires feature the new ROAR legal 1:8 Truggy bead design and a redesigned carcass shape that includes internal ribbing. The new bead design mimics the 1:8 buggy bead design which will make for easier assembly and a stronger bond between the wheel and the tire. The carcass shape has been refined to take advantage of the new bead design. Internal ribbing has been added to minimize tire growth at high RPM and support the tire contact patch during cornering. All this adds up to much improved handling and lower lap times.
The prices vary from about $25/pair (just tires) to $53/pair (premounts).
