START _LiPo Safety DISPOSAL Here’s a tip: don’t keep unnecessary fire hazards around. If your LiPo is pooched, get rid of it. No bonus points are handed out for greatest dead LiPo collection. If you have a local recycling center, you can drop off your bag of RC dynamite there. Otherwise, the simple home method is to discharge them as much as possible and then soak them in a pail of saltwater for 48 hours. After that, bring them to your local recycling station. CLOSING Lithium polymer has not been just a short stepping- stone between cell technologies; this hobby has embraced the chemistry, and for good reason. We have decided to take the bad with the good, which puts the onus on users to keep their cells happy and safe. Enjoy all this extra power and reliability; sure, you may get the odd fire, but if you’ve ever “dumped” at the four-minute point of a race, you’ll understand why we all love LiPo. Put It Out You can take all the precautions in the world, but there is still always a chance you’ll experience a LiPo fire one day. If possible, disconnect the battery from your charger or ESC, and clear away items that are close to the battery, especially any flammable stuff. Keep in mind that it’s a chemical fire, so don’t throw water on it; sand or dirt are best to use to smother a fire, or an approved fire extinguisher, if one is available. Remove the offending battery from the premises as soon as possible and be careful not to breathe the toxic fumes. Having the pack removed from your car and in a LiPo sack will make all these steps much safer and easier. Basically, follow the rules, and if something goes wrong, be prepared to deal with it but also try to figure out what happened so you don’t pop another in the same way. 34 WWW.VRCMAG.COM RECYCLE do NOT throw any battery out.
